Sangmyung University's Russian Language and Regional Studies Major is becoming a cradle to nurture professional and creative Russian culture professionals who will play a pivotal role in the new Eurasian cooperation era. The Eurasian Initiative, which has emerged as one of the most important concepts of foreign policy in our country, indicates that Korea 's foreign policy has been shifting away from Western Europe and the United States, while expanding to Northeast Asia and Eurasia. Eurasian countries with abundant natural resources and vast markets have now become new partners and close economic partners with Korea in the 21st century, and there is no need to say more about the political and economic significance of the partnership. In this process of change, Central Asian countries, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, as well as Russia, have emerged as important geopolitical partners with Korea. In line with this, the Sangmyung University Russian Language and Regional Studies major was re-launched from the former 'Russian Language and Literature' system, and changed its system in 2017 into the 'Russian Language and Regional Studies major'. Its educational goal is to nurture professional and creative talents that will play a pivotal role in our partnership with Central Asian countries. The primary goal of the curriculum focuses on cultivating Russian language that is used as an official language in Russia and Central Asia. Based on this, it will educate students to acquire diverse regional knowledge concerning social, cultural, historical, political, economic and diplomatic aspects of Russia and Central Asian countries and cultivate a wide range of regional literacy that is indispensable in future interactions with this region. To become a cradle of professional and creative Russian culture professionals, all members and faculty of the Russian Language and Regional Studies Major are working hard to develop students’ expertise and skills.
